This town has a population of 450 and its K-12 school has an arboretum with 125 varieties of trees and shrubs.

A small nicely landscaped zoo with 60 animal and bird species is described as "clean and green". The hand-carved carousel is also a treat.

 Denbeigh Experimental Forest: 15 Miles West of Towner, ND (701)228-5422.
Established 60 years ago to evaluated trees for the Great Plains, this forest features labeled trees and shrubs in a park-like setting (with some sand dunes thrown in).

 Dickinson Research Extension Center: 1133 State Ave., Dickinson, ND 58601 (701)483-2348 .
Take a break from the Dakota Dinosaur Museum to see something living -- and there's much to see at this 3,259 acre extension research center. Horticultural research includes xeriscape gardening, potatoes, tomatoes, turf grasses, bedding plants, tree nursery and shelterbelt renovation.

 Fort Stevenson State Park Arboretum: 3 miles south of Garrison, ND (701)337-5576.
A new arboretum has been established at this state park, which also offers a prairie dog town.

 Gunlogson Arboretum and Nature Preserve: Highway 5, Next to Icelandic State Park, Cavalier, ND 58220 (701)265-4561.
This state preserve bordering a 3/4 mile segment of the Tongue River offers self-guided tours through woodlands predominated by dominated by mature elm and basswood.

 International Peace Garden:  R.R. 1, 13 miles north of Dunseith on Highway 3, Dunseith , ND 58329 (701)263-4390.
Straddling the United States/Canadian border, this 2,339-acre national park offers formal gardens (including plantings based on a yearly theme, fountains, a floral clock, and a sunken garden), an arboretum, man-made lakes, the 100 foot high Peace Tower, and the Peace Chapel (built on the border).

This small community offers a 26 acre arboretum with 500 varieties of trees and shrubs at the site of the Larimore Dam Recreation Area.
