The 15 acre Cathedral Gardens, nestled in a valley, offers panorama of a dozen gardens planted with perennials and over 12,000 annuals and laced with fountains and statuary from around the world.  This privately owned garden is open for tours.

Inside this Conservatory with solar-energy collectors, heat retention curtains and earthen berms, the visitor will discover three gardens: the Showcase House (seasonal displays), the Tropical House (with orchids, palms and other exotics and a waterfall), and the Sonoran Desert House.

This handsome 7,500 square foot structure houses free-flying birds and tropical plants. The Conservatory displays an Amazon River Region Rainforest, a large collection of Bromeliads and other epiphytes planted in a natural setting, a 15 foot waterfall, bonsai trees, flowering plants and orchids. Outside is a sunken garden.

The home of author, naturalist and photographer Gene Stratton-Porter, this site with a cabin on the shores of Sylvan Lake includes woodland trails and wildflower gardens she created featuring plants from around the state.

A 355 acre former country estate, now a mature beech/maple forest, the Arboretum features the Beech/Maple trail The Springhouse Trail, The Fern Garden Trail, The Habitat Trail, The History Trail, the Research Pond, and a Nature Center.

 

 Hill Memorial Rose Garden, All America Rose Garden and the Richmond Friendship Garden: Glen Miller Park, US 40 East, Richmond, IN (765)962-1638.

Richmond, the "Rose City", began the lovely All America Rose Selections Garden in 1985. The garden, a melding of European and Victorian design, will eventually exhibit 2,000 roses with annuals, perennials, evergreens and ornamental trees. The Park also features two other rose gardens, the Hill Memorial Garden and a newer Friendship Garden, resulting from Richmond's friendship with the Zweibruken, Germany. The Friendship Garden is of German design and features roses that were gifts from the Europas Rosegarten in Zweibruken.

This 20 acre garden with pond and a statue of Persephone is the site of many campus events.

Oldfields, a 26-acre estate located on the grounds of the IMA, was laid out in the 1910s and 1920s in a country estate design. Special areas include the Ravine Garden (featuring a brook feeding three rock-rimmed pools and tens of thousands of bulbs, perennials, wildflowers, ferns, and flowering trees and shrubs), the Allee with an elegant fountain, the Border Gardens, the Wood Formal Garden, and the Garden for Everyone (a sensory garden).

These 100 acre gardens, representing gardening styles from around the world, are undergoing renovation.

This Italian style formal garden with statuary and fountains is divided into nine sections. Gardens include the Crane Statue Garden, perennial beds, a sunken Garden with fountain, and an herb garden. The home is privately owned and the gardens are generously opened to the public on weekends during the growing season.

A century old nursery, now a public park, has an English Tea House, giant Toadstools, the Rising Sun Bench and a whimsical windmill, formerly part of its 1934 World's Fair Garden Exhibit.

One of America's largest rose gardens, this lovely All America Rose Selections accredited garden displays nearly 2,000 rose bushes showcasing 154 varieties.

An impressive Greek Revival mansion showcases gardens restored to reflect the style of the mid 19th century using historic plants that were originally used in the gardens of the mansion or surrounding areas.

The Harmony Society, a German religious group, settled in Indiana to await the second coming of Christ. They built the Labyrinth there, a circular maze of shrubbery with a small stone temple at its center. To the Harmonists it symbolized the difficult path to "true harmony."

Located along the banks of the White River, this 6 acre garden was created in the English cottage style by a former owner and her daughter. Areas of special interest include an English lawn garden, a rock garden, an herb garden, and a lily pond.

A lavish 38-room Romanesque Queen Anne mansion is surrounded by 2.5 acres of landscaped gardens, including a garden tea house, formal Italianate garden, rose garden, pergola, tennis lawn, and fountain, all restored to look as they did in 1915.

 

 Purdue University Horticulture Gardens: 1165 Horticulture Bldg., Marstellar Street and

This half acre gardens showcases a wide diversity of plants, including over 300 cultivars of annual flowers and garden vegetables. Exhibits display nearly 200 species of perennial flowers and foliage plants, including special collections of peonies, daylilies, hosta, spring-flowering bulbs, and ornamental grasses.

 

 Shiojiri Niwa Japanese Gardens: Merryfield Park Complex, 1000 E. Mishawaka Avenue,

The Shiojiri Niwa Japanese Gardens were designed by the Japanese landscape architect at Disney World's Epcot Center as a symbol of the friendship between Mishawaka and its sister city, Shiojiri, Japan.

The home of a member of the Hoosier Group of American regional impressionist painters lived in this house with his wife, who created several acres of gardens around the home.

 

 Warsaw Biblical Gardens: Corner of Canal Street and SR1 5N, Warsaw, IN, 46580

The gardens, situated on approximately 3/4 acre, currently contains over one-hundred plants that are named in the Bible that are hardy enough to survive in the Midwest. Tender plants are wintered in the greenhouse. Separate areas in the garden include the Forest, Brook, Meadow, Desert, Crop and Herb Gardens, the Grape Arbor, and the Gathering site.

 

 White River Gardens: West Washington Street, Indianapolis, IN 46208.

Newly created 3.3 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds on a site next to the White River and the Indianapolis Zoo, the Gardens include the barn-like glass-enclosed Hilbert Conservatory featuring special exhibits year round, the De Haan Tiergarten (design gardens, a shade garden, a sun garden with meandering trails and a stream, a water garden, and a wedding garden), the Polly Horton Hix Design Garden (themed garden rooms providing examples of unusual design techniques), the Knot Garden, and an Ornamental Allee.
