New Mexico Gardens

This wonderful park includes the Rio Grande Botanical Garden (see below), the Rio Grande Zoo, the Albuquerque Aquarium and the Tingley Aquatic Park.

 Albuquerque Rose Garden: Wyoming Regional Library, 8205 Apache Ave. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110.
This splendid garden of the Albuquerque Rose Society was recently completely renovated. The current collection (1203 bushes representing 493 cultivars and 26 classes of roses) is organized into separate areas for hybrid teas, old garden roses and floribundas, hybrid rugosas, polyanthas and miniatures, hybrid musks, newer ground cover roses, and climbing and rambling roses (on a 70 foot long pergola and steel trellises).

Some of the many interesting programs offered at this national park include the medicinal and food use, including by Native Americans, of desert plants.

 Chile Pepper Institute Demonstration Garden: New Mexico State University, Chile Breeding Programs Greenhouse, Fabian Garcia Science Center (West End of Campus across the railroad tracks from University Ave. or Main Street), Las Cruces, NM 88003 (505)646-3028.
NMSU has been involved in chile cultivar development for more than 100 years. This breeding program centers on New Mexico's five main chile crops: Red, Green, Paprika, Jalapeņo, and Cayenne as well as ornamental chiles.

 Living Desert State Park Zoo and Gardens: National Parks Highway, P.O. Box 100, Carlsbad, NM 88221 (505)887-5516.
This 1,100 acre indoor/outdoor living museum offers more than 40 native animal species from birds to bison, hundreds of succulents displayed in a greenhouse setting, and a 1.3 mile nature tour.

A state-of-the-art 11,000 square foot conservatory features the Desert Pavilion (xeric species), the Mediterranean Pavilion (aromatic species) and three walled gardens with fountains, tile, herbs and roses. A Children's Fantasy Garden is planned.

This free public zoo displays native and exotic animals and birds in a series of enclosures exhibiting the plants and animals of the River Bottoms, the Plains, the Foothills and the Mountains.

This Pueblo Revival style park-like campus encompasses a Campus Arboretum displaying 320 difference species of plants.
